Evening Dressage 20th July 2016 - Chairman's Report

Our second evening dressage enjoyed perfect weather, warm with a cooling breeze in the arena field. Our two judges; Sue Thwaites and Martine Harbour had a busy two and a half hours judging around 20 classes each with test 7 attracting 13 entries.
This was jointly won by Hilary Box's improving Ringo and Lamiro, one of Tina Muir's two horses. Tina Muir's two horses starred in Prelim.14 taking 1st & 2nd, Lamiro in 1st & Southborne Rolo 2nd, the latter, also, winning Novice 24 while his stable mate took 3rd. A 3rd in Novice 27 completed a very successful evening for Tina who finished the evening festooned in rosettes.
Anita Street and Grey Lad had success in Novice Test 27 beating Emily Thompson into 2nd by a margin of 12 points.
Well done to all the prize winners and many thanks to everyone who helped on the night..

RC Area Dressage 10th July 2-16 - Chairman's Report

Vectis Team Members faced an early start in miserable weather on Sunday to take part in the Area Dressage Competition at Pinkmead in Botley. Ground conditions were not good from the word go when Emily's lorry had to be towed onto the show ground. The going was even worse in the arenas, ranging from bad to dreadful.
Some of the horses coped extremely well, considering the circumstances, especially Georgina's Jimmie who won test 14 and Tina who finished 5th. However, Emily's Dino was, obviously, annoyed that he should be asked to sink in up to his fetlocks and was unable to perform at his best.
Conditions were somewhat better in Test 24's arena, where Dino improved dramatically to take 5th and Jimmie took 4th. In the team competition, the results of Emily, Georgina Tina and Southborne Rolo and Josie Toogood with Oscar secured 2nd place for the team behind the I.W. Riding Club.
The Open Team went one better to win and qualify for the championships at Lincoln. The team of Carla -Halvenna Injesta ; Amber – Obelix; Kelly- Chelesto and Natasha – Shamlord Sunrise
achieved the lowest possible score of 3 as Carla, Amber and Kelly all won their arenas. Scores being allotted in order of place e.g. 1 for 1st; 2 for 2nd and so on.
The sun even came out in the afternoon and everyone dried out., a good end to a great day for our teams.
Thank you to Jane for looking after everyone and to her and Alex Toogood for doing a stint of helpers on the day. Without providing helpers, we would not be allowed to compete.
Very well done to all our team members.

Evening Dressage 6th July 2016 - Chairman's Report

Having had to postpone our first evening dressage because of the dismal weather, we had our fingers crossed for the next one. Happily for riders and organisers, the sun decided to shine on us for the greater part of the evening and our two judges, Daryl Smith and Jackie Woodford were kept busy with nearly 40 tests. The Intro A test attracted 8 entrants and was won by Megan Jacobs on Tucker with a very good score of over 70%, closely followed by Simone Morley on Code in second and Beth King on Allendale Cleopatra. Meanwhile in Arena 2, Tina Muir and Lamiro were the very good winners with 72.5%; second place was Hilary Box with Ringo who, with long flowing mane and tail scored 70.42
and Sue Nigh's Abergavenny Alys coming in at 3rd on 69.17%. Sue was also 3rd in Test 28. Unfortunately, Alan Stay who is making good progress in what is, for him, a new discipline had to withdraw Phantom Ranch who suddenly became unsound .
In Test 14, Abbie Denham achieved the highest percentage of the day on Chico with 80%, beating Hilary (2nd) and Chelle Rigby on Condor (3rd).
Emily Thompson and her lovely Dom Perignon achieved a double winning both the novice tests. Tina Muir took 2nd in 24 while Anita Street and Grey Lad 111 were 3rd and also 2nd in Test 28.
Thanks to our judges, stewards, scorer and everyone else who helped on the night. Special mention of Sandy Evans who, is now our First Aider at events,
as it is now a requirement of Riding Clubs that we have someone with a 3 day first aid certificate at most of our events. Luckily, her skills were not needed on the evening.

Ride The Wight 2016 - Report by our Team co-ordinator Anna Lek

Sorry for the delay in reporting our endurance exploits at Ride the Wight. [Tiredness kicked in!]
On Friday and Sunday our teams experienced the highs and lows of endurance riding.
The Allsorts got a team through which was great. Caroline Cooper got a Grade 1. Kevin Cooke at his first event got Grade 4. Emma Broadhurst had a Completion. Lorraine Sheerin got a Grade 2. Lucy Moul’s lovely horse had the best heart rate at the finish, but sadly trotted up lame and so was eliminated. We will certainly hope to have her back on a team very soon. Crewing was tricky to say the least because of road closures. We did manage to reach our meeting places and cheer on our riders as well as throwing water about.
Wight Wanderers team also had mixed fortunes. Jo Hogan and Sue Waddleton retired on course as Sue was unfortunately unwell. They both came back to the venue (having taken the horses home) to support their team mates. Sue Jones got a Grade 1 and Amber Winson a Grade 2. Hilary Box’s Ringo despite being dwarfed by her companion’s horse had a very creditable final heart rate but was unsound. I think it’s safe to assume that both eliminations were due to some quite testing ground. It only takes one stone!.
As usual the team’s spirit was excellent and everyone seemed to have a good time. Thank you to our crews who were unflaggingly cheerful.
Our next adventure should be another qualifier, but in England!
Many thanks to Karen Whittington for organising the event, and to Kingates Equestrian for the beautiful venue.
Hopefully photos will follow.

2016 Quiz - Chairman's report

11 teams took part in the Club's Annual Quiz held at the Chequers on 14th April. Questions included : natural world, music, true or false, words beginning with R and others set by quiz master, Di Andrews and chief adjudicator Jane Frost. Bev Snudden abandoned her usual rounds of photos of close up objects, which were usually met by howls of despair and this year, provided 2 picture rounds. One of the countries of Europe proved difficult for most of us who were unable to name the eastern European countries (at least, not in the right places). The other was of Points of the Horse which had many trying to remember their Pony Club days.
It was a very close thing until the very end when the Froghill Four just managed to pull ahead of the Isle of Wight Riding Club, who have won this trophy more times than any other team. Vectis can claim some of the victory as the winning team consisted, largely, of our club members namely: were our members, namely Mandy Steen, Jodie Janes and husband Martin and Trish Norton who claimed the trophy and £50 first prize.

Competitive and Pleasure rides from Di's field, Godshill

Well, we have not had many hot days this summer, but this was one of them, providing an extra challenge to all the riders and horses taking part!  It was great to see several newcomers and we hope they enjoyed the event and will come again. Once again Caroline Cooper was the clear winner, even though she had no transport so had to hack to the venue! Full results on the results page.

Many thank to Di for the use of her field and also to Anna and David who put in a lot of work to make these events happen.

VECTIS Horse of the Year Competition 2015

The Endurance Ride held on Sunday 19th April saw the start of our Vectis Riding Club Horse of the Year Competition for 2015.

This competition is to show the horse/pony can compete in different events.

The qualifying events are Dressage, Show Jumping and Endurance Riding. Points can be gained at all Vectis competitions in these disciplines from April through to October 2015 (excluding BD and Team dressage).

The horse/pony, which must be owned and ridden by Vectis members, may be ridden by two different riders but only one in each discipline.

The committee would like to thank Mandy from Froghill Tack for her kind sponsorship of this event over the last few years. This year Froghill Tack will be instead sponsoring the rosettes for the Dressage Festival.

More details can be found in the Events Diary page.

BRC National Championships at Lincoln Sept 7/8 2014

Five members represented Vectis at the BRC National Champioships at Lincoln Showground on the week end of 6 & 7 September.

Kelly Harris riding Chelesto qualified for Novice 34 and the Intermediate Style Jumping.  Kelly ended up 7th in 34 and did a very entertaining clear round in her jumping!

Millie Meadows riding Merrie Mainstream rode exceptionally well in her Novice Show Jumping Class. She had three poles down over the two rounds.

The Junior team of Sophie Wickham, Maddy McIntosh, Ellie Roberts and Millie Meadows competed in the Riding Test and the Dressage Team. They all rode brilliantly and as a team they were 12th in the Riding Test and 17th in the dressage teams. Individually Ellie was 5th in her riding test arena. Sophie was 3rd in her riding test arena and also 4th in her elementary qualifier.

A big thank you to the members who made the effort to get to Lincoln so that Vectis could be represented at these championships. Also a big thank you to everyone who supported the fund raising events to help get them there.

Ride the Wight BRC Endurance Qualifier 26.4.14

Two teams from Vectis competed very successfully in the Riding Clubs Endurance Team Qualifier over 32km on Saturday 26th April at ‘Ride the Wight’ from Lake Farm. The two teams are aiming to qualify for the final in Wales in October. The teams were Vectis Vanguard – Amber Winson on Obelix, Kirsty Newnham on Truway Daphne and Abigail Newnham on Truway Delilah, and Vectis Valiants – Ann Ely on Pinball Wizard, Caroline Cooper on Perowne Cha Cha, Linda Morris on Fulford Romany and Jo’ Hogan on Setae.

The event wasn’t without drama! Due to the weather parking was restricted to Lake Farm rather than the top field. It was tight to say the least! Next the route was changed in places because of the treacherous going. During the event Abbi’s mount lost a shoe! Nigel Johnson got to her in record time to replace it. What a star! Despite this hold up Vectis Vanguard still managed comfortably to make the time. Caroline’s twenty two year old pony had a final heart rate of 35! This combined with a speed of 13.3kph won them a very smart saddle cloth. Jo’ Hogan’s Setae is an old hand at all this and did the team proud. Ann and Linda have done endurance before but not for longer than we care to remember! They also had an excellent score. Amber’s lovely horse Obelix looks almost too big for this discipline but his high level of fitness ensured a really good final result. Sisters Abbi’ and Kirsty rode very competently to keep their ponies cool and finished extremely well. The grades were as follows: Abbi’ Grade 1, Kirsty Grade 2, Amber Grade 2, Ann Grade 1, Linda Grade 1, Caroline Grade 1 and Jo’ Grade 1. This means that both teams will have good scores to challenge the rest of the South of England Area. We have high hopes that they will qualify. Fingers crossed!

A big thank you to Hilary, Fliss and Joeley, Ian and Helen, and Dave and Anna for crewing so efficiently.
Please contact Anna Lek if you would like to join in the fun and be part of a team. [854166, 07552638607 annalek@btinternet.com

Natasha riding in the under 138cm section was 5th in the prelim. Abbie riding in the over 138cm section was 8th in her section. Maddy rode in the mini section and was 7th in the prelim and Ellie also riding in the mini was placed 11th.

Annual Dinner at the New Holmewood - Sat 8 February

The annual dinner was again held at the New Holmwood Hotel in Cowes on Saturday 8 February and although numbers were sadly depleted from the previous year – no doubt due to the interminable after dinner quiz hosted by quizmaster Linda Alexander Armstrong Allen – everyone enjoyed this popular social occasion.

Our venerable Chairman Di Andrews was voted Quizmaster this year by the committee, (with Linda Allen securing at least three votes in order to ensure Di’s victory) and once more she provided great entertainment, some very dodgy Charades rounds, and a very competitive competition.

This year one of the rounds required the presentation of various articles of clothing, miscellaneous items, and mathematical knowledge – all of which were produced from Jane Frost’s extensive collection within her rucksack!

Sadly, two of the three tables cheated extensively during a number of rounds, thereby depriving the only truly honest and upstanding members on table 1 of glory!

Thanks must go to the Management and staff of the New Holmwood for the superb menu and service, and also to Di, who also organised the entire event.

Spider Ride to Little East Standen with Clear Round Jumping - 9 FEB

A well attended meeting, members received their awards for the year and we were entertained by Island vet Kate Manners with a very interesting talk on safer horse rescue. The evening winners were Sophie Wickham, Linda Allen, Louise Watson, Caroline Cooper, Pam Gardener, Jodie Reay, Paige Richards, Maddy McIntosh.

Huge thanks to Mandy at Froghill for her continued support of this competition, the winners of which have won points over the Summer season in all different disciplines proving they are true RC horses/ponies.

Evening Dressage 3 July

How lucky we were to enjoy the first evening of this spell of fine weather for our evening dressage.  For once, we were able to leave off the jackets and rain hats and enjoy the evening sunshine. We had 34 entries spread over two rings under the eagle eyes of judges Jackie Woodford and Sue Thwaites.

Our first class saw two very competent leading rein riders who set the standard with two good tests,; Freya Rann and Catkin winning with 70% over Olivia Reay and Shadow who went on to win the unled section of Vectis A Test. The restricted Prelim. 4 was won by Ellie Roberts, still get used to her new ride Shamlord Chardonnay.  Sophie Wickham (one of our junior team members) took both the Prelim 7 and  Prelim. 12 with scores of over 70%  on Penclose Sonny Jim.  The novice tests were closely contested with less than 1 mark separating the two top competitors in each test.  Kelly Blow and Chelesto narrowly beating Linda Allen and Broadstone Lovebug in 27 who was also the bridesmaid in 28 when , first to go, Sue Bull and Finders Keepers scored the winning score of just under 70%.

We finished at the respectable time of 8.30 which gave those who had hacked time to get home in the light.

As usual, a huge thank you to everyone who helped.  We can only hold these events if enough people volunteer their time, so please offer to help when you can.

Summer Festival - 23 June

Lots of entries were received for our Summer Festival and we were lucky with the weather - No Rain!!  Three arenas were running and a show jumping ring kept everyone busy.  The Combined Training proved popular along with unaffiliated and BD Affiliated dressage and NPS dressage qualifiers.

Combined Training winners were Class 1 Holly Whyte, Class 2 Sarah Holmes, Class 3 Sarah Holmes.

Dressage winners - Prelim 7 Sarah Holmes, Prelim 12 Sarah Holmes, Prelim 15 Lynden Barrow, Novice 27 Jen Attrill, Novice 35 Martine Harbour, Novice 37 Martine Harbour, Elementary 49 Pam Gardener, Elementary 53 Sue Bull.

Show Jumping at Little Kennerley Farm

The Show Jumping held at Little Kennerley, Godshill enjoyed weather that was fine if a little chilly.  The 'clear round' gave riders a chance to practice over jumps rising from 18” to 2'6”.

This was the ideal time to get young and inexperienced horses a chance to jump on grass  with lots of assistance from Course Builder – Helen Wood who did not allow anyone out of the ring until they had completed the course.  The most popular class was the 2'6” which was won by Sue Nye on the speedy Digby after a 3 horse jump-off.  Many thanks to Helen for all her hard work and to Dawn Webster for the continued use of her facilities.

Quiz Night at the Chequers

The Annual Quiz was held at The Chequers on 25th April when 13 teams from other Clubs and groups

competed for the £50 first prize.  Questions, which were set by the Chairman and Jane Frost, covered a variety of subjects including music, literature, the Isle of Wight and the Olympics.  The nature round was a popular choice for teams to play their joker and double up on points; although, some may have regretted it when they heard the questions.

There was a lot of discussion on the 'odd one out round' and some head scratching over the very difficult photos of everyday objects at unusual angles.  Allendale had the distinction of being the first team in the Quiz's history of scoring no points in the photo round. As usual, the photos  were provided by Bev Snudden.

The 2 Leveret teams enjoyed keen competition, vying for the booby prize, until Leverets B shot up the points board with an unexpected 9 out of 10 on the 'news' round, prompting some of the other teams to unfairly accuse them of cheating! This cleared the way for Leverets A to be awarded the booby prize.

First place and £50 prize money went to frequent past winner, the I.W. Riding Club who scored 172;the  team was Mon Yates, Heidi Carder, Fi Vanassche and  Alison Hill.   Second place & £20 was taken by Mountain & Moorland A team with 168 points  and third and £10 went to West Wight Riding Club with only 1 point less.

Unaffiliated Dressage - 6 April at Lake Farm

At last we all managed to enjoy an event in the sunshine!! Thank you to our judges Jackie Woodford and Martine Harbour and all our helpers.

The winners: Vectis A Bella Green. Intro A Anita Street & Bella Green. Prelim 4 Heather Nelson. Prelim 14 Natasha Coventry. PYO 15/22 Sam Dyer. PYO 35/40 Pam Gardener.

Annual Dinner - Saturday 23 February

The annual dinner was once again held at the new Holmwood Hotel in Cowes, where 40 members and guests enjoyed a fun evening. It started with a very entertaining talk by well known dressage trainer John Lasseter, who’s account of his early years leading up to his time spent at the Spanish Riding School of Vienna was both interesting and funny. This was followed by a very nice meal, after which Linda Allen had devised a six round game involving a mixture of mental and physical tasks. (It must have taken her ages!) Included was a round of charades which caused much hilarity, and in round five, Louise Hawkins and Sara Rickard’s skill in picking up a small box from the floor with their teeth, without touching the floor with their hands or arms was incredibly impressive. Louise’s efforts helped her team to take first place. Thanks to Linda for putting in so much effort, and we are all looking forward to some more fun and games next year.

Junior member Jodie Reay who finished 2nd with Little Star Socio also achieved an impressive score of 46 and carried off the junior trophy. We had a tie for 10th of several ponies who gained the maximum of 24 in just one discipline.

We decided to give the prize of a Breyer Horse set to Freya Rann who was by far the youngest (and the most likely to appreciate a toy horse!) All the prizes were kindly donated by Froghill Tack and we are once again indebted to Mandy Steen for her generosity.

Showing Show

The postponed showing show was held on 25th August with the weather still very unsettled. New Forest breeder Lisa Kingett-Ricquier and successful show rider Karen Ledger were our judges for the day and after a very wet start to the day, the sun decided to shine on them for the afternoon. Pony entries were very poor for the first time ever except for the mini classes which were dominated by 4 year old Freya Rann who won the Leading Rein, Turnout & Condition (with a bit of help from her mum) and then shared the games championship with Jessica Isaacson. The horse classes were better supported with Clarrisa Arberry's Allendale's From Here to Eternity showing his versatility by winning the Riding Horse and taking 3rd in the Riding Club Horse. This latter class being won by the very able Rasputin ridden by Kate Suitor. Charlotte Hill had the ride on Linda Allen's Broadstone Lovebug winning the Show Hunter class. Jodie Reay on Little Star Socio was another dual winner, being first in the Riding Class and the Riding Pony Class. Anne Hack from Brighstone awarded the hotly contested prettiest mare class to Sarah ridden by Kyllah Dyer.
My thanks to everyone who helped on the day and before in getting the rings ready. After a very packed August, we now have a little breather from events and keep our fingers crossed for a fine September/October when we might be tempted to organise some more events.

Evening Dressage at Godshill, 15 August

Trying to make up for all the lost events in June and July, we managed to fit in another dressage on the evening of 15th August. The morning didn't look too hopeful as we put up the two arenas in the rain. Hopes of keeping the arenas down from the last event were thwarted by the grass growing so much that the boards were hidden. So, they had to be removed, then replaced once the field was topped by our local farmer. Luckily by 4.00p.m. The sun had appeared and we were able to enjoy a very pleasant evening in the warmth. Over 30 entries were received and Sue Thwaites and Martine Harbour were kept busy judging a good standard of tests. Thanks to them and to Trish Collins, our junior judge (the riders not Trish!)

Clarrisa Arberry & Allendales Fuegos From Here to Eternity (could I call himAllen? )went away with two 1sts (Prelim. 7 & Junior Test 4). Sophie Wickham on Penclose Sonny Jim also won 2 tests namely Prelim 12 & Prelim 14, while the only Novice test was won by Broadstone Lovebug and Linda Allen.

Thanks to our 2 writers Louise & Kelly Blow, our lovely stewards Anna Lek & Fliss Crouch , score collectors Mandy Steen & Tina Murrant & my co-scorer Jackie Woodford on an evening when we only seemed to have one brain between us; most tests having to be added up at least 3 times before we got it right.

John Lassetter Clinic at Lake Farm

I first heard of John Lassetter when I was a teenager and he had an amazing reputation then. When he came to the Island a few months ago I was too much in awe to book a lesson with him. However after hearing other riders say how much they had enjoyed their lessons with him, and after checking with Trudy that he would teach anyone, I decided to be brave and take up the opportunity. Neither Digby nor I are young anymore but I was sure that we could still learn something.

The lesson flew by and I found myself concentrating entirely on what John was saying and totally unaware of any thing else going on or who was watching. The different exercises got us to improve without any anxiousness or self-consciousness. He praised us when we got things right and helped us when it was difficult. I have a few more things up my sleeve now for when Digby says that work is too much effort!

The things that I will take away from the lesson are that I must praise my horse more when he gets things right. He must respond to me when I ask him to go forward, and the better I sit the better he will go. So we have plenty to work on until my next lesson. My only wish for next time is that it is not quite such a hot day and I do not finish up looking like a beetroot!

VECTIS WIN Endurance Qualifier!!

Well done to our Endurance Team - Mandy & Emily Steen, Caroline Cooper and Emma Broadhurst winners of the Riding Clubs Area Event.

Three Rivers (R.C. Team Endurance Qualifier) 10 June 2012 Report by Anna Lek On Sunday 10th June a team of four Vectis Equestrian members and their enthusiastic crew travelled to Tenantry Farm near Fordingbridge. This was to compete in a qualifier for the National Riding Clubs Endurance Final to be held in Wales in October. The team consisted of Mandy and Emily Steen, Emma Broadhurst and Caroline Cooper. The talented crew were Hilary Box, Tina Murrant, Tracy Bowell, Di Andrews, Chris Foulkes, Chris Hillier, Dave Dana, Fliss Crouch and Anna Lek.

The weather forecast was dire but although chilly and grey, the rain held off until after our team had finished. Mandy rode with daughter Emily whilst Caroline on her substitute mount partnered Emma. All four horses passed the vet and prepared to start. The 33k route was over gently undulating tracks, nature reserve downland and broad grass verges. The brisk pace caught out the crews at Check Point 1 in the lovely village of Martin. We arrived just in time to wave the team through. Unperturbed they quickly settled into a good rhythm and the miles flew past. Crews had to hurry to Check Point 3 having driven straight past it once! Riders were force fed food and drink and the horses drank and were ‘sloshed’ (This is not what you may think! It involves pouring water over them.)

The team were well up to speed and the horses looked great. The crews whizzed back to the next meeting place back at Check Point 1. More water throwing and drinking. The last time we met up was at Check Point 7 and the team approached us at a good swinging trot with smiling riders and prick-eared horses. At the finish the team was spot on their optimum time of 13kph. Thirty minutes later it was the dreaded final vetting! Well, it couldn’t have been better! Four Grade Ones! Mandy’s Daisy had a heart rate of an unbelievable 37. Caroline’s Cha (a very young 20yr old) was apparently “worth persevering with”. Emily’s Roxy had her lowest heart rate ever and tried very hard to behave. Emma’s Cherry B was impeccable and put the icing on the cake. What a result! We will be going to the National Final. Well done everyone!

John Lassetter Clinic

The John Lassetter clinic was a great opportunity for Island riders to gain from his vast experience. Trudi did a brilliant job arranging him coming over to Judge at the Affiliated dressage on Sunday followed by the clinic the next day. Many thanks to Trudi, Fliss & Rodney for their hard work. Those having lessons really enjoyed them and it is hoped that he will come back to the Island soon.
